The Importance of Universal Human Rights

Achieving a truly universal theory of rights is an important goal. A theory of human rights that is understood and accepted all over the world is a code that governs how people interact with each other, either as individuals or as an individual with a group. It also provides a standard against which legislation passed by governments can be evaluated and by which actions by governments can be judged. It is analogous to the "Rules of the Road" which is essentially a code of rights of people who are driving vehicles on the public road. Consider what these rules have done to make the flow of traffic orderly, workable and safe for all users. In addition, a person from one country can operate a vehicle in any other because the rules are very similar everywhere. A universal code of human rights has this potential- to make the operation of society workable, orderly and safe. As well, this code applies wherever one is in the world. It is a code for judging the actions of any person in any country.
